29th
Preceded by National Sorry Day on May 26th, National Reconciliation Week is framed by two key events in history: the change to the referendum allowing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders the right to vote in 1967 and the 1992 Mabo decision in the High Court that overturned the legal doctrine of ‘terra nullis’. This year’s theme “Lets Talk Recognition” aims to encourage a national discussion to support changes to the constitution- a constitution that was written over 100 years and still does not recognise our indigenous population as Australia’s First People and as custodians of one of the world’s oldest culture. This is an opportunity for our communities, schools, workplaces and government to talk about how we want to close the gap and shape Australia’s future. www.reconciliation.org.au
